The Bonding Credit program, in partnership with the teaching staff at Nutana Collegiate, assists students, who are parents or become pregnant while still in school, to obtain a Special Project credit. Young women, who have children at home or give birth during the school year, are often left with the choice either to return to school immediately or to remain at home isolated from the many school supports and resources.
The Bonding Credit bridges this gap by enabling new mothers to focus their energies on learning critical bonding and parenting skills right after the birth of their baby; while doing so, they are also earning a school credit and benefiting from the supports offered by the Jacoby Centre and ISLS services.
This unique program, developed in collaboration with each student parent, is adapted to fit the individual's needs. The student parent and the staff collaborate to create an action plan by discussing student interest, expectations, and capacity to commit to fulfilling the requirements to complete the credit. The plan is then tailored to fit the current situation of the mother and provides for flexibility that facilitates an authentic learning experience.
