A formal parenting group takes place each week in the Jacoby Centre at noon; a healthy lunch is provided to all participants. This lunch and learn hour provides a safe and inclusive environment where student parents can build positive relationships with their peers who often share similar life experience. Staff and students discuss a variety of issues including prenatal and postnatal care; mental health; healthy relationships; intimate partner violence; how abuse affects children; literacy; child custody and access; accessing community resources; sexual health; dental health; and general life skills.
The topics for the parenting group are guided by the interest and need of our student participants. Through this group, we hope not only to encourage positive parenting but also to empower the student parents by providing them with knowledge and skills.
